Brad Pitt goes shame-less, sings with Damon in movie
MANILA, Philippines Brad Pitt, who is part of the singing cast of Happy Feet Two, revealed he was forced to sing alongside Matt Damon while voice acting their roles for the sequel.
Director George Miller shared the two A-listers enjoyed studio banter while doing their parts.
They (Pitt and Damon) were really very free, working off each other, because they know each other so well. Matt Damon can sing, and Brad Pitt made it really clear upfront he couldnt. But Brad just said, This is a no-shame zone; Im just going to go out there and give it a go, and he did remarkably well. His singing is in the movie.
The singing Pitt was part of playing Will and Bill The Krill in the Warner Bros. adventure film which introduces new characters, particularly the tiny creatures at the bottom of the food chain played by the Oceans Eleven co-stars.
Damon confessed to being surprised he had to sing. The singing was a bit of a surprise. It was fun to just go for it and say, What the hell? Its definitely not my strong suit, but I figured, you gotta go loud or go home, he said in an e-mailed statement to Bulletin Entertainment from Warner.
The filmmakers were lucky they were able to sell a contagious fearless studio atmosphere to the actors who fortunately recorded together. Having the opportunity to bounce off movie lines against each other afforded Pitt and Damon confidence to just go ahead and sing compared to the usual voice acting where actors record individually.
There is a contagious fearlessness that comes from George. You see a guy who loves the project that much and you realize that what made the first movie great is that spirit. Brad and I were doing stuff weve never done in any kind of movie, animated or not. We left there thinking, Now that was cool! said a clearly sold Damon.
Another force the actors had to contend with is the fact that their own children are fans of the 2006 Happy Feet.
The Hollywood tough guys were bound to live up to the requirements of th! eir role s, or face revolt from their kids.
Co-producer Doug Mitchell said, We learned later on that Brads and Matts kids are fans of the first film, and I think it is safe to say that they had a lot to do with them taking the roles.
Bill Miller added, Do not underestimate the power of children to pester their parents to act in a film. Matt Damon told us he hadnt even cracked open the screenplay to Happy Feet Two before his daughter said, Dad, youre doing it. Matt really had no choice.
The director said of the krill duo: Will and Bill live in a great biomass of billions and billions of krill that move with the tides theyre the bottom and the basis of the food chain. Every animal up the chain relies on krill. And in the middle of these indistinguishable billions are Bill and Will, played by Damon and Pitt. Will decides that he feels hes different from everyone else around him and he ventures outside the swarm. Will wants to evolve higher up the food chain. Bill, on the other hand, is terrified. He just wants to stay and continue to behave exactly like all the other krill.
Slated for IMAX 3D and 2D regular run on Nov. 23, Happy Feet Two also stars Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Pink (who takes over the part Brittany Murphy left from the original), Sofia Vergara, among others.
