Reuniting Pitt with The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford director Andrew Dominik, Killing Them Softly also stars James Gandolfini, Richard Jenkins, Ray Liotta, Scoot McNairy, Ben Mendelsohn and Sam Shepard.

Based on the George V Higgins novel Cogan's Trade, the film follows Jackie Cogan (Pitt), an enforcer investigating the robbery of a mob-protected poker game.
