Director David Fincher wants Pitt to star in a new film adaptation of the classic Jules Verne novel

Brad Pitt is first choice to star in a new film adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.

According to Variety, director David Fincher is "courting" Pitt to star as Ned Land, the hero from Jules Verne's classic sci-fi novel. The character was famously played by Kirk Douglas in a 1954 film produced by Walt Disney himself.

Fincher has been attached to the new 20,000 Leagues movie since July 2010, but the project has yet to receive the go-ahead from Walt Disney Pictures. Last year (2011), Fincher hired screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker - who wrote the director's classic 1995 movie Se7en - to rewrite the script.

Se7en also marked Fincher's first collaboration with Pitt. The pair went on to work with each other again on 1999's Fight Club and 2008's The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, which suggests that the director's opinion should hold sway with the actor.

When asked for a comment by Variety, Pitt's representative gave a vague response, saying that the actor had no firm commitments for 2013 and is currently exploring options.! The actor's latest film, crime drama Killing Them Softly, opened in cinemas last month (September 2012). You can watch the trailer below.
